Job Description

The Library Media Specialist serves as an instructional partner, information expert, and literacy advocate who ensures that Gananda’s libraries function as vibrant, inclusive learning hubs. This role directly supports the district’s mission to inspire each student to achieve lifelong success by designing engaging learning experiences, curating high-quality resources, and fostering a culture where every learner feels they belong and can thrive.

Responsibilities

• Inclusive Learning Spaces: Design and maintain a welcoming, safe, and accessible library environment where all students feel valued and represented. Promote belonging through diverse collections, inclusive programming, and equitable access to resources.
• Instructional Partnership: Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop personalized, standards-aligned learning experiences that strengthen literacy, research skills, and digital citizenship.
• Dynamic Literacy Experiences: Plan and lead engaging lessons, read-alouds, inquiry projects, and enrichment activities that spark curiosity and foster a love of reading.
• Information & Media Literacy: Teach students to locate, evaluate, and use information responsibly. Guide learners in navigating digital tools, understanding online safety, and developing critical thinking skills.
• Collection Development: Curate a diverse, high-quality collection that reflects student interests, supports curriculum goals, and represents a wide range of voices and experiences.
• Technology Integration: Support students and staff in using digital platforms, research databases, and emerging technologies that enhance personalized learning.
• Community Engagement: Build strong relationships with families, staff, and the broader Gananda community to promote shared purpose, pride, and celebration of student success.
• Program Leadership: Lead the continuous improvement of the library program through data-informed decision-making,  and alignment with District goals.

Qualifications

• NY Certification Requirements: Valid New York State certification as a Library Media Specialist.
• Strong knowledge of children’s literature, instructional design, and information literacy.
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practice.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, and families.
• Experience integrating technology into learning environments.
